Glossy or matte? A practical guide.
Same price, same paper grade, same longevity — but the visual result is different. Here's how to pick the right finish for each photo.
There's no right answer — it depends on use.
If you don't know yet where the photo will live, pick glossy. It's the classic photo-card look and works in most situations. If you already know the print is going into a frame under glass — matte is usually better.
What glossy paper gives you.
- Deeper colors — contrast roughly 15% above matte
- Deeper blacks — evening shots, shadows, night photography render better
- Classic photo-card look — what you remember from photo-shop days
- Color-rich content shines — sunsets, flowers, vibrant portraits
What glossy costs you
- Fingerprints show — don't touch the image area
- Reflections — under frame glass, can obscure the photo at certain angles
- Viewing angle matters — visibility depends on lighting and where you stand
What matte paper gives you.
- No reflection — readable from any angle under frame glass
- Sharper perceived detail — fine textures stand out without surface glare competing
- Softer, calmer feel — less aggressive presence
- Better for portraits — skin texture looks more natural
What matte costs you
- Colors slightly softer — especially in low-light shots
- Blacks less deep — the "richness" of the print is reduced
- Lower contrast — noticeable on high-contrast photos

What's the same between the two.
Both run on DNP DS820 8×12" PP (Premium Paper), same thickness ~270 g/m². The only difference is surface structure and finish layer. Longevity, color-shift resistance, and water/fingerprint resistance are identical.
If still in doubt — order one of each.
The most reliable way to choose is to see both yourself. Order one print in each finish, compare them, then go with what you preferred on the next order. At the smallest size (10×15 cm), two prints cost under €2.
